Discover and understand research in a fun way with family and friends
This fun, educational and immersive game will allow participants to discover all the stages of the research and publication process of a scientific result, inspired by the discovery of a gene made in an Institut Imagine laboratory.
For one hour, participants will be able to put themselves in the shoes of a researcher in search of a scientific breakthrough that will lead to a better understanding of a disease. In a laboratory, and passing through a doctor's office, they will try to put a name to a child's disease by looking for the gene involved.
At each new step, the game master - a researcher and scientific mediator - will tell the story of the discovery, distilling information on genetics, the profession of researcher, the stakes and the results of the research. Thus, the participants will go from the consultation to the research, to the diagnosis and the hope of a treatment.
The game unfolds in four stages, going through games of digging, DNA extraction and more, with the goal of reaching key research milestones, including:
- Diagnostic wandering: the time and journey families take before putting a name to the disease;
- Sample/DNA: follow the journey of a sample from blood draw to research;
- Sequencing: understand the concepts of genes, heredity, genetic code;
- Scientific dissemination: understand publication and scientific methodology.
Explain science and transmit it to the general public
Institut Imagine has set itself ambitious societal missions, including disseminating knowledge about rare genetic diseases, sharing the challenges, methods and results of research with as many people as possible, while encouraging vocations for doctors and researchers, particularly among young people. In 2020, the Institute recruited a coordinator for the Education and Society programs, and in 2021, it launched a scientific dissemination grant program for doctoral students. The mission of the fellows is to promote medical research careers, raise awareness of genetic diseases and share the challenges and advances of scientific research by organizing visits, workshops and meetings with the public and by deploying tools and content for popularizing science.
"The current health context has shown even more strongly that it is essential to explain science and its methodologies, to show what we are doing, what we know, and what we do not yet know. Institut Imagine is committed to sharing the knowledge, advances and hopes of its teams' research with the general public, and particularly with young people. It is with this ambition of openness that we wish to develop innovative educational models such as this Escape Genes, to share what is happening within our walls and to allow people to experience one of the facets of the scientific discovery process. We are even prouder that this game was developed in-house by our new scientific mediation team, made up of young doctoral students eager to share the behind-the-scenes aspects of their fascinating profession", underlines Laure Boquet, General Delegate of Institut Imagine.
We are happy to welcome you to the Institut Imagine!
